Hey all..

I'm looking to upgrade my wheels on my Trek Fuel EX-7 29. I'm a big guy (6'5" tall, 290 pounds), and I'm looking for suggestions on wheels that won't fail me. I've tried searching this forum and didn't find anything. I'd like to stay under $1500 for the set if that's realistic (I have no idea to be honest).

Thanks..

-D

I will suggest the notubes flow for the rim.
I have used their ztr Hubs without any problems and sun Ringle. Both those choices are around 500 bucks.

Yeah, what he said. They might not be the sexiest looking, but everyone seems to love their Stans rims. Your budget is more than adequate -- it would get you some fancy "racing" rims. You didn't say what part of your wheels failed, but you could get a reputable wheel builder (specialist or local shop, some have been recommended on DT) to build you some with extra stout spokes if that's a problem. And I'd say get wider rims and run the widest tires that will fit your bike.

...and check on this forum:

IMO, Roger Lovett is THE most experienced wrench in this county, although he likes to keep a low profile. He's been wrenching, frame building and wheel building for over 40 years.

And, as a former member of the 300# club, he knows how to make stuff that's strong.
His shop is Bernie's Bike Shop ( he bought it from Bernie) and he's a well-known fixture in the velodrome world. 'Course, right now, we don't GOT no velodrome, but another one is going to rise from the ashes and the dry rot of the original.

His shop phone is 619 224 7084. Bernie's is in the colorful beachfront community of Ocean Beach.

You'll be blown away by his rates, too.

Oh.....and make sure he knows that Ray sent you. That's the ticket

Cool. Thanks. Basically my problem right now is the wheels just go out of true almost every ride. I'll give Roger a call when I'm home (deployed to Afghanistan right now).

Thanks for serving. And, being on DT almost eight years! Take care over there.
