Last Saturday (Oct 15th), we were riding out at Lake Hodges and riding out towards the switchbacks at Rancho Sante Fe (essentially the same route as the Arch ride) and came across a private security guard. She was sitting on top of the last climb out of Hodges on the asphalt roadway section (right near Del Dios Hwy). We were told that we couldn't ride towards the dam from the top of Hodges. I asked the security guard who she was working for and she said "the county". She then asked us "didn't you see the signs?". I've been riding back there 20+ years and there has never been a sign and still isn't. The only signs are on the paved access "ramp" leading up to Del Dios Highway and were obviously intended for vehicles, not hikers or bikers. I didn't want to argue with her so we rode up on the highway for about 1/2 mile before dropping down on to the trail.

I personally believe that she was indeed hired to keep people off the dam but had positioned herself in the wrong place and was stopping the wrong groups of people without even knowing it. There's no telling how many people she stopped and convinced to turn back. We continued our ride out to the switchbacks and she was still parked in the same spot adjacent to Del Dios on our return. She was sitting in her vehicle and didn't get out to talk to us.

Just wanted to give everybody the heads up so you weren't surprised out there. I sent an email to SDMBA as well.

Once again we have yet another fine example of our hard earned and easily taken tax dollars at work here folks. Hope she was carrying hollow point rounds with her

Nothing yet Bankerboy. I'm convinced the lady was clueless and "guarding" the wrong access gate to the dam area. I'll post up if I hear anything.

Dirtrider...she wasn't armed thankfully. She was in a uniform with the shirt hanging out and "posted" in her personal car which was about as filthy as the chickens car in those old Tyson's chicken commercials.

We rode Hodges Sat. There was a car parked down by the damn. We did not see anyone up by the trail.
