The comments are interesting. No link to an actual report yet. Could be one disgruntled Inyo NF employee with access to the FB page. Same post has been copied onto a local patch. Pedal strike seems highly unlikely but not impossible. Certainly difficult to prove conclusively. Waiting to see the official report.

yeah, the inciweb site didn't have any new info. I didn't think aluminum would spark, but I guess the spikes on flats are likely steel, as are the clip in part of clipless.

I'm calling total BS on this "finding"
Probably someone playing Pokemon Go on their iPhone and while not paying attention they tripped, hitting the phone on the rock and the battery caught fire. :flame:

If it was caused by a mountain biker, it was due to a discarded blunt not a pedal strike.

Regarding magnesium, yes it does burn as bright as the sun, but it takes a huge amount of energy to get it hot enough to burn. I lit up magnesium wire in high school Chem class on a bunsen burner, and it took a good minute of immersion in the hottest part of the flame before it lit up the room. Detention followed...

Turns out this is what the USFS is saying started the fire. I'm guessing that someone took a break near the rock in question and did something that started a fire, but I guess it is physically possible to happen from a pedal strike.

Will be interesting to see if the anti mtb crowds grab this example.

Considering that hunters who lit illegal campfires which started massive wildfires have not led to hunting being banned I would hope MTB has little to fear from a ~100acre fire that started accidentally.
