If you on a whim took some time off and had between a Tuesday morning and Saturday evening with nothing to do, but all your friends were at work - where would you ride if you'd never ridden outside of San Diego county? Camping or motel or day trip, whatever is all cool - there's no one to please but me and I'm easy lol. Want to avoid super remote if I actually end up going solo and needs to be easily first time navigable.

Thoughts? I figured out I could use 3 days of PTO next week for a full week off, now I just need to decide how to use my time :)

Since it seems like you're talking next week, I would check all the 10 day weather predictions and then go to St George/Hurricane (Gooseberry Mesa), Utah which is about a 6-7 hour drive from North County. Sedona is another option and if you don't mind a longer drive, you could go to Fruita, Colorado. All of those areas are "desert like" without alot of trees or shade. If you'd prefer to ride in the trees, check out Santa Cruz or drive all the way to Oregon if you want the creme de la creme.

You can download the free apps at Trailforks or MTB Project dot com to search out riding areas and to keep you from getting lost. At least in St George, the Trailforks app even helped us find one of the hardest trailheads to find without a single issue.

I'd second all of these:
1.Sedona
2. Gooseberry
3. Fruita
4. San Jose

but if you want to stay in SoCal but further, Big Bear and SART are good 2-3 hour spots that you might not have tried. I just shuttled SART from South Forks Campground on CA-38 all the way to Mentone. You'd need two cars though.

If you post up on the Arizona forum of MTBR that you're looking for folks to ride with, you'll probably have no problem finding somebody to show you around. When we did that about 4 years ago, I had 5-6 people offer to ride with us. Since then, the signage has improved tremendously. We bought a map at "Bike & Bean" when we pulled into town but pretty much just used the apps I mentioned about to get around on our most recent trip.

I would normally suggest Sedona and Hurricane, but not this time of year - unless you like it hot. If you go, each one is not very remote and signage is good so getting lost would not be a problem.

I've done both Prescott and Flagstaff on Memorial Day weekend a couple times. Prescott is a bit cooler and Flagstaff would be perfect temps right now. Flag, Prescott and Sedona are close enough you could base out of one and ride the others for a couple days. There is free camping in Prescott and Flag that is convenient to town and right on the trails. The Arizona Tr near Flagstaff is awesome. As someone mentioned get the Trailforks App. Riders in AZ have been active in uploading trails, and this will show you where you are on a smartphone without cell reception.

If I had as much time as you I would also consider Oregon. We went a few years ago at start of June, it is a prime time to be there. Check out our TRs here in the Oregon subforum. You need a shuttle for some of the river trails but there is plenty else to ride.

This isn't the easiest time of year to do a trip because it's getting hot at low elevations but a lot of higher stuff hasn't opened up yet.

If none of those other great options pan out, it looks like a lot of Tahoe is open:

http://www.tamba.org/trails/trail-conditions/

Hit Lower Rock Creek trail on the way up or back:

https://fatbikemammoth.com/2014/05/10/r ... eek-trail/

Hit Calavera on the way up AND back.

Isn't there a little green shack where camping is allowed out in the south forty? Might even find some hidden beers if you look close enough.

haha maybe I'll just stay local and go around drinking up all the DT beer hidden out there :)

This'll probably get me kicked off the board, but never ridden calavera!

Haha. Good one! ....wait.. WHAT!!?

Well, as great as it is, with some reluctance, I still can't recommend it as a destination spot.... Although, now you need to make a point to come ride up here soon with the local jokesters.

You're in a bit of a pickle with this one. I will suggest Big Bear and SART (with Santa Cruz as a runner up only because I've not yet ridden there and want to). That way you can bail and go home if you want to after a day or two of riding. You have some good options, but sometimes it's hard to do those epic rides solo. You will have awesome riding....but no one to share the experience with.

Great trails can be compared with eating great food. You know the old saying. "Don't tell me what you ate for dinner. Tell me about the interesting people you shared and enjoyed the meal with".

But hey, we all gotta eat and it still tastes great even when alone, so have a great time. You really do have some good options.

I've seen the great evdog in action up in Prescott during Memorial weekend before  Prescott is a bit cooler but if I was riding by myself I'd hit up Sedona. It's going to be 80-85 for the next week or more which is great weather for me.

I second, third, whatever Sedona. Supposed to be low 80's this weekend. I'll let you know how it is sat :)

Although watching recent videos of flagstaff have me itching to head a little further.

Sedona would be perfect, just ride earlier or later if it's hot. There are so many well-made and well-marked trails, and riders everywhere and gorgeous scenery you are virtually guaranteed to have a TR worthy trip. St. George is right up there too. The trails are not as many though, nor as well-marked.

It's hard to get that many non-weekend days off. You would be driving and riding with relative ease, making an 8 hour drive more palatable. Save the closer stuff for long weekends.

Then you could get a six pack and come down to Calavera some Thursday morning and tell all the retired people about your trip after you ride the fireroads there.

If my biker hauler gets out of the shop I'll be riding Prescott Saturday then head to Sedona until Tuesday  :domo: :ninja:
