Since we now know our resident Urban Yeti (Big Clyde) will be in the market for a new hoopty soon, I reckon it's time to chime in and provide some opinions that were not asked for, or likely even desired (too bad!). I've selected a nice crop of current bikes for you all to choose from. Assume carbon frames for all except GG Megatrail. Although I have my own opinions, I shall keep them to myself, as I don't know if some of these bikes fit a particular sized rider better than others. (Harley, you should definitely get the SC Nomad or the Transition Patrol!!!) Ahhh dangit....

Some thoughts: the rider is not overly aggressive BUT, I believe he enjoys enough travel and progressive geometry to give him high confidence for dicey situations, AND, as far as I know, 30 mile rides are likely close to the max, with 8 to 15 miles being the norm (not sure how many of those miles are hiking vs riding though... :ninja: ). Anyway, 150mm suspension is where I'm going with this as the minimum travel. Oh yeah, once the KTM's sell, the bike will be funded from the proceeds, so don't let price get in the way. The sky's the limit boys! hehe..

This list includes the following, with a few random comments thrown in for good measure.

MyTop Choices for Urban Yetis:

Evil Insurgent (I'm biased!)
Santa Cruz Nomad (yummy)
Santa Cruz Bronson (a little more sedate than it's bigger brother. Sedate..? Piss off Sedate!)
Transition Patrol Carbon (top contender!)
Yeti SB6C (strong contender here too. And the brand name..so fitting!)

Secondary Choices - all are Yeti approved:

Devinci Spartan (I don't know much about this Canadian brand)
Evil Wreckoning (29er. Very interesting, but still..probably not..)
Guerrilla Gravity Megatrail (no carbon version. Gasp! but still very intriguing..)
Ibis HD3 (Good climber. Not as brilliant on rough descents as many others here)
Intense Tracer 275C (local. lot's of support. Many yetis like VPP)
Pivot Mach 6 (retains old school shorter top tube...hmmmm....)
Turner RFX 4.0 (local. great support. very good bike. Does it have the magic?)
Yeti SB5C (I prefer the idea of it's bigger brother)
YT Capra (press fit BB = )

Worth considering:

Giant Reign Advanced 27.5 (might not be boutique enough for the discerning urban yeti, but oh so pretty - might have to move this up to Secondary Choices)
Mantis Ghost (sometimes I cannot control myself.)
Trek Slash (see Giant comments. NOT pretty though)

Buy the Reign and have money left over for upgrades and other gear.

Its not sexy but is an urban Yeti sexy?

...I think new Nomad, but I could see him on an Uzzi, Firebird, or the Yeti 6C.

I like the idea of not having a bike that you see a ton of on the trails. With that logic, I like the Transition Patrol from what I've read about the bike AND the guys that run the company. Is there a local shop that carried them so that you can at least LOOK at the bike and maybe spin it around the parking lot?

I have a 2014 Pivot Mach 6 and love the bike. It goes up and down well. I imagine the 2016 is only better. One guy in our group has a pimped out Ibis HD3 (XTR Di2) and that thing is actually nice and snappy for a 6" travel bike. It goes down just fine but at 26 lbs, you pick the best line you can while the Mach 6 plows right thru stuff. Another guy in our group (58 years old) has the YT Capra and he is loving it so much that his Intense Spider just collects dust. I haven't ridden it but he says it is better that the Intense in all aspects. Best deal out there, hands down!!

I've demo'd the SB6C in Fruita and admittedly it wasn't set up the way I would prefer so my opinion is skewed but I wasn't overly impressed. I thought the front end was squirrely (prob due to 800mm bars I had never ridden with) and both of us that rode it didn't like the way it climbed compared to the Mach 6. My friend did like the way it went down with the Fox 36 though.

Now the SB5C on the other hand...WOW. That bike does it all. Built up with XX1, the bike was 24.96 lbs and climbed like a scalded cat and going down was a dream as well for a bike with a 140mm fork (most people run a 150mm now and some are running a Fox 36 160mm). Jared Graves won a pro enduro on the bike so if its' good enough for a pro to win on, it's good enough for us mere mortals at Calavera  That Switch Infinity suspension system is the real deal to keep all the chatter bumps in check. My only concern is the system "looks" so complicated, I wonder what maintenance type issues will be though Yeti claims to have tested the design for 3 years before releasing it. Bike of the Year honors as well :bang:

^^^ Well, the SB5 has actually been at the top of my short list of dream bikes for quite a while. But if I were betting, I'd put my money on a new Nomad for Big Clyde. I've seen that gleam in his eye...

Another SB5 in action on the tail end of this group

http://www.singletracks.com/blog/mtb-vi ... tain-ahab/

ODD...the rumors are that the next SB5 will be released this Summer than will have internal cable routing and Boost spacing which may or may not be a good thing depending on if you want to use your current wheelset. I like internal routing but don't care about Boost. Also, not sure if I'm patient enough to wait...

I'm going to go way out on a limb here and make a prediction.

High end version of SC Bronson in size L. Pike fork. Fox Float Evol shock. Shimano XT components. And the kicker? DUAL chain ring. Say what? That's my prediction and I'm sticking to it.

Who knows though; could be anything. :ninja:
