I remember reading in Psych 101 about something similar, but instead of having an oddly functioning bicycle, the test subjects wore prism-type eyeglasses that flipped and reversed everything in the wearer's field of vision. The effect was similar - at first it was nearly impossible to ride the bike while wearing the glasses, but once the subject learned how to do that, he or she had to re-learn how to ride a bike while not wearing the glasses.
