If you are a Tri-canyon rider (Rose and San Clemente) be aware the marines are now going to enforce their western boundaries. This means any land east of the 805 from just north of Miramar Rd to the 52. Stay away from the nursery, it is also on military land.

From SDMBA Facebook post:

The marines have warned that they will start ticketing in the western boundaries of Marine Corps Air Station Miramar by Hwy. 805.

Here's an update of the legal areas you can ride near the base. This map is meant to augment your own personal research. As a responsible, well informed mountain biker you should check agency websites, pay attention to signs on the trail, and talk to your local Open Space Manager. If you have a doubt about whether you can ride somewhere or not we urge you to err on the side of caution.

I guess that jibes with the story about riders coming up into the cemetery during a funeral.

So that means we can start riding Sycamore again, right?

I suppose it would be poor form to create some fake Strava accounts like "SSgt Jones" and doctor up some old GPX files to give them KOMs on Barrels and Toads...occurring shortly after the enforcement started...

Thankfully, I was wrong. I left the meeting just as it was being opened up for public comment, but until then the audience was well behaved. Dianne Jacob spoke at length about Sycamore Canyon and I learned for the first time what a truly committed advocate she is.

The way I saw it Supv. Jacobs explained how she spent 23 years asking for trail access and getting "no" from someone that could NOT say yes. I'd say that was a real productive effort <as if.....>.

It's gonna take a HUGE massive letter writing, e-mail sending, phone calling.......... loud and frequent to ALL public representatives that have ANY hand in the matter. Civil discourse is encouraged, but LOTS OF IT. Until this issue gets resolved it should show up as a nagging noise everyday to the office and staff of all representatives.

Last night proved we have the "manpower", now lets use last night's meeting as a BEGINNING to a relentless campaign. It will work.......

^^^ I didn't have the same take away, given the MOU that was entered into, but agree that now is the time to apply some more pressure. Also, I really liked her recommendation to continue working on parallel tracks to get access from the Marines and to come up with a realignment that makes access from the Marines unnecessary.

Funny but the message I took away was "NO".

They (Miramar) are concerned about a lot of things but the one that stood out to me was the concern over fragmentation of base property. Everybody wants a piece of what they have. They had already conceded 100's of acres in Scripps Ranch. The question posed was how small is too small to be an effective base?

Could they shed 230 acres more and still be effective. Sure. We all know the Stowe Trail lies outside of any known impact areas. But where do they draw the line on base size? I think they already have and are not willing to lose anymore acreage. This is not just at the CO level. There were studies done years ago and bases were closed as a result of cost and need. Both Miramar and Pendleton were deemed vital to national interests. They will not be going anywhere soon.

I am not saying don't write letters. I am saying to continue pursuing all options, including helping the city and county find viable alternatives. With luck we get both. I don't think we will see that day in our lifetime.
