The problem I have is the feeling of a dead spot in the pedal stroke. I would like to minimize that feeling, so maybe oval rings are not the answer.

Where do you feel the dead spot? In theory the oval should allow you to spin through the off power section faster. Not sure if that would make your "dead spot" better or worse.

Maybe you need one of the squarish rings, osymetric..

Absolute Black is offering a 30 day trial on Premium Oval ring. If you don't like it, you can exchange it for a round ring.

You may feel the deadspot to much because you are pushing to easy of a gear during certain portions of the trail so you get the spinning sensation without adding any power.

Odd said it right. Try it out and see what you think. That is a pretty good marketing gimmick.

Biowaste had a different profile dependent on ring size.

In general they were counter- intuitive. They had a lower gear ratio (easier to push) in the powere stroke and higher gear ratio (harder to push) in the dead spot.

The theory being that you made hay in the power stroke and via momentum magically breezed thru the dead spot.

At some magic rpm range it worked. We're men not metronomes!

If you had some bugger steep section that you had to grind in granny at low RPM you were toast as the pedals would get near 6/12 o'colock and you have zippo for power and a taller gear to boot.

Granny gears were 28 teeth (stock) in those days. I swapped to a 24 tooth stainless Ninja ring that is still on that bike today (not that it see's much use).
