Dear Mountain Biking,

I've been seeing someone else -- an old flame actually. We split up after a long affair shortly before I discovered you. Yeah, it's surfing. It's been so good too. Things got off to a rocky start at first. It was pretty frustrating, but once we hit our stride, well, here we are.

With surfing, falling rarely means a trip to the hospital. I've never done the grape-stomp-lady sound after falling off my board. With you, uh, remember Daley?

After surfing, I'm covered in water. That's right. It's the stuff I use to wash off all of the dirt you get on me. You know what else? It's cool water. I'm not having a heatstroke out there. Ever.

To prepare for surfing, I have to dump my gear (which costs a whole lot less by the way) into the car. I don't have to lubricate anything. I don't have to check for any mechanical issues that might put me in the hospital. I might have to rub some $3 wax on the top of my board.

You and I found each other when I was in need of exercise to drop the weight I was putting on with beer*. Strangely, however, you never really helped me out there. No, I continued to gain weight. I don't really need to lose weight now, but I'm actually losing weight surfing. Can you believe it???

But, I can't quit you mountain biking. I've had a lot of good times with you: hiking's sexier, fun-loving cousin. We'll have to go hit those tunnels soon. Don't get mad at me if I'm fantasizing about getting barreled in the trees.

Your friend

Ld00d

*me + beer = <3 forever

Well, now everyone knows, you unfaithful slut. Good call to make a clean breast of it.

Yeah, but the dirt waves are good every day. And riding is actually better with friends, (the more the merrier, vs. get the f**k off my wave!).

Surfing can be so fantastic. Used to do it religiously. Now I travel East to go dirt surf for my own personal fulfillment instead.

it's really easy to develop a passion for either or both though, and that's the real deal right there, so whatever is stoking your flame, more power to you! Glad to hear you're enjoying life. :D

I surfed religiously for over 20 years, but the crowds and the water pollution drove me to discover mountain bikes.
Now I surf the earth.

I surfed for years, spent 4 years surfing nor cal in college and when I returned I realized so cal waves sucked 90% of the time. Dirt waves are perma-stoke. I loved the letter, it was a great laugh!

No reason you can't do both :-) I also like surfing, but mostly go during the warmer summer days, although the waves aren't as big, I'm not that good at surfing, so just out to have fun. Also in the winter, I'm into skiing. Like others said, nice thing about biking in SD is conditions are very rarely bad.

I managed to really jack my foot up surfing yesterday. Might have to eat some crow.

Absolutely. I suck at both, but I suck slightly less at surfing.
