Another late payment on the railroad. Maybe this one will be missed entirely and the whole project will be scrapped.

"Penalty for Failure" should definitely be the name of that infamous little spur. Either that or "Miles' Piles."

I'll ride with you Doug. It's about time that I made my annual pilgrimage to Carrizo. You want to go sometime before May as that's when the heat kicks in full. That's no place to be riding in summer. A cool cloudy day is best.

It is a long and fun ride. We got over 30 miles out there once by going almost all the way into Ocatillo and then back. But getting to the final tunnel and back makes the ride about a 20 miler. If you want to overnight, there's a sandy camping area behind an extremely well made white stone wall just beyond the last tunnel that would be a fun place to watch the stars. I've seen freshly quenched camp fires there many times.

There's no hills to climb since it is a rail line, but riding the ties does cause fatigue. Not to mention the extra effort expended clenching the cheeks together on the many trestles  , and the many on/off the bike transitions as you have to jump into and out of the rails repeatedly. It seems like it should be an easier ride than it is.

Went there last year with huge group of Bonita Bikers. There were a couple of rather dangerous crashes, and a couple of bail outs who turned around and left near the beginning of the ride due to freakouts on the trestles. Not a beginner ride.

I'm in anytime someone wants to go. A shuttle from the "colony" to Dos Cabeza would be the ticket.

I've done the trip to Ocotillo twice, not really fun.

I'd be up for a out and back to Goat as well. But while its only a 2° grade coming back, 9+ miles of that plus the heat and wind wears on the body.

Anybody who can go, should go. It is a great ride. I have done it twice. First time was about a mile or two past Goat Trestle and the second time was with the kids (13/10/8) out to the sided train. We had a great time. Like Ohnooo says, trestles can be scary but just walk the few you don't like. We did and it all turned out fine.

Remember to take lights for the tunnels. They are DARK

Just a couple things to add:

- Bring something to cover your nose & mouth for when you're in the longer tunnels, especially those with blown concrete walls. That dust is nasty, and it may not even settle from the time you go out to the time you come back. Disposable painter's masks seem to be popular (judging from a number being discarded along the tracks -- please don't do that  ).

- This time of year it can get nasty with cold and wind, not to mention freezing rain. Don't get caught unprepared.

- Even if the temps are mild, you will be losing fluid through sweat and won't realize it due to the dryness and rapid evaporation.

- Cholla balls like to congregate in small depressions in the trail, oftentimes not noticed until you roll right into them. Bring extra tube & patch kit.

- A few of the steel grates forming the trestle catwalks have come unfastened and created gaps, and these can be nasty hazards if you aren't paying attention.

Have fun!

Ah yes... the jumping cholla balls. I swear they leap out about 3 feet from the plant to attach themselves to your legs. BRING A COMB as that is the only safe way to remove those buggers. I used my gloved hands once, and the stickers went right through the leather fingers.

Now there is reports that someone has derailed the double decked passenger cars on the first side spur. The rail police are asking the owners to start enforcing and correct the problem. One group of asshats may have not only derailed the cars but wrecked accessibility for the masses. Nice move dicks!

^^^ How many determined mountain bikers do you suppose it would take to lift the car back onto the track?

How many do you think it took to place that wrecked car on the rock in sycamore canyon?
