Will a sram cassette work on a shimano hub and vice versa? Also what cassette and chain would you recommend to go on my stumpy pro. Maybe a 970 or 990 cassette and matching chain? Thanks

Yes..the SRAM cassette is compatable with shimano hubs, and vise versa.
I have been a fan of Shimano cassettes and chains for years. I have run xt cassettes and chains exclusively for the last 9-10 years. But, when it comes time to replace them I think I may go to a SRAM 990 as it costs much than the XT and only weighs about 25 grams more (cassette). The new XT stuff from shimano is real nice but it also shows in the price now. I have read great reviews on the SRAM stuff, heck I run an XO rear der. its on its 6th or 7th year and x-9 shifters as well, I really like the way they perform. I would however recommend you stay away from the SRAM hollow pin chains as I have beared witness to many hollow pin trailside chain repairs.

The repair we had of my chain wasn't too bad. Keep in mind it was also a hollow pin going on, not coming off ;-)

I believe most of the Stumpys in '07 came with a combination Shimano/SRAM drivetrain as all are interchangeable.
IMO I wouldn't go with anything more or less than a 970 cassette and a 971 chain. Anything less would be a huge performance loss with little cost savings and anything more is a lot more expensive for little gain (mostly weight).

Yup. Broke a hollow pin in 26 miles (in the middle of a f*cking race to boot :x) and I'm a whopping 150 lbs. I've been running a 980 cassette and 971 chain for years. ZERO problems. I think SRAM shifts "nicer" but that's just my experience.

I don't think they are compatible. The newer shimano chainrings have a different offset and also have a newer ramping system.

Arron get your stuff from Chainreactioncycles.com . I would go with XTR cassette and XTR/dura ace 9 speed chain 7701 . They have great prices on Shimano stuff , speed over 230 and get free shipping in your hands in a week if everything is in stock

Buy an SRAM 990 cassettefrom beyond bikes for $62.95

Then buy a Dura Ace/XTR 9 Speed Chain 7701 from beyond bikes for 29.99

You should be good if your front chain rings aren't toast.
