I went out to Spring & Oak today to see for myself the cutting that has been going on. I did the standard loop including Teote, Toads, Iron Tread and 3 Barrels. Here are the pics...

Was a beautiful day regardless of trail butchering, check the colors out while you can...
Image

On 3 barrels some damage was evident. Despite cutting to waist level it didn't seem to me like the cutting really improved sight lines that much
Image

Reports I read said these bushes were almost forming a tunnel. Did not seem like it to me but its hard to judge when I have not been there in a long time. Regardless, how does overhead coverage from a tunnel impair one's ability to see traffic ahead? I see more impairment from the sides of the tunnel of brush that was not cut back....
Image

Lower on iron tread, some pointless brushing. Improvement to line of sight or reaction time is minimal IMO
Image

Trail on bottom of Oak Cyn, lazy piling of brush next to trail. Brushing is possibly unneeded to begin with?
Image

More pointless line of sight brushing and lazy disposal
Image

Same spot
Image

Not sure how this really resolves line of sight
Image

amusing, found along trail...
Image

also found same spot...
Image

I don't know if "Chris" will actually see this but if he does he should recognize that crap trail work like this is neither beneficial to the trail nor to his strava time:
Image

Same as this
Image

Or this
Image

Or this
Image

Or this
Image

Or this...seriously, how is this cutting going to improve your strava time?????
Image

And this section on Teote which is big time blown out, tread close to 5 ft wide
Image

More cutting that does not really improve sight lines
Image

Squirrel run down by flagrant MTBer
Image

Or wait, was it just nature interrupted??
Image

Fortunately the cutting that I saw today was not as bad as I expected based on the online reports I had read. There were some spots that were absolutely butchered but I was expecting more of a top to bottom rape-age than what I actually saw. This actually makes me think the whole thing may be an attempt to troll the whole MTB community more so than an attempt by one guy to improve his strava times.

I say this mainly because a lot of the spots cut back don't really improve sight lines. If he really wanted to make the trails faster by improving sight lines he missed a ton of brush. He basically made a big mess of some sections of trail with not a lot of effort. Seems a bit dubious to me, especially considering that...he also makes the trails faster for everyone else by making them faster for himself???

Personally I think this whole thing is a major troll by Chris campbell to illicit a major internet drama on all of us. And we have fallen for it... So while I do think we should not "feed the troll" I definitely think we all need to band together and run this cam(pb)ell fucker out of town...for good.

It looks like he is just trying to make it so the corners can really be dipped into. Most of the cuts are sloped away from the trail allowing a rider to really get low and lean the bike.

hmm, I wonder if those signs had anything to do with him apparently deleting his strava account

I guess he decided he wouldn't continue to use strava after all?

These trails of been trimmed for years unbeknownst to many of you, poison oak has been eradicated for years apparently unbeknownst to you. Without some maintenance these trails will completely grow over and you'll be bashing through brush and poison oak, which is plentiful out there, to ride them. Given the amount of traffic these trails are seeing these days and the type of riding being done the aggressive trail trimming shown in the photos is necessary. It's a lot of work to trim trails so it's better to cut them well back. I agree the dead branches laying along the trailer are unsightly and it would be helpful if some of you could pick them up and move them off trail. So I say thanks to the individual who has done all the heavy lifting out there and I will continue to do my trail trimming as I see fit.

That was a bad, bad idea, racer bill.

eradicate means that it will not come back.

i congratulate those who have reconstructed and stabilized parts of the trails when the rains eroded sections making them unridable.

as for the rest, i am less convinced.

And who, in their right mind, would want to "really get low and lean the bike".

It's soooooo much more fun AND challenging to ride slow, upright, and not lean the bike.

Cornering is so much better slow and upright with no lean angle.

Son of a bitch... If you're going to do some trimming, how about starting with the damn posts that you're quoting. We don't need to see evdog's pictures three effing times in a row. Learn how to use the internet.
