I hear there's over 2 ft of the white stuff up in Julian. Has anyone tried to ride up there when there's snow on the ground?

I've tried riding in the snow long ago and surprisingly, the tires will hold, but this was on the road in mt. laguna with only 5 inches.

That could be coold to do. :)

Some 2.6s set a little low on pressure can get the job done too, but steering will still be tricky. The powder is easier to deal with than when it is packed or thawed and refrozen.

My last snow riding excursion was in the San Gabs.

I have ridden a few times in the snow on 2.1s and it was fine. However it was powder with good trail to mud at some spots below. I think the key is realizing that you don't know what is under the powder if it is deep and being a bit carefull. I hit a small log that I made it over but could have been bad if I were going slower. On the other hand I would think suprise icy spots would make you shit yourself at any speed. Have fun and good luck.

Think they would let you on the lift at Mammoth? Kamikaze in the snow would be epic!

Favorite Trails: Cuyamaca
I rode Cuyamaca earlier this year the day after the big Valentines day snow dump. At the school camp parking lot there was only an inch or so of snow dusting the ground. But when I got up to the top of soapstone, it was about 4 inches deep with drifts to about 8 inches in spots.

It was awesome. I'm thinking of heading up there again Saturday morning to see if any of it is still sticking after two days of partly cloudy melting it off. It's too mucky to take any of the singletrack, but sticking to the fire roads is fun enough when they're blanketed like this.

I had a great time on my 29er, but my buddy on his 26er was getting hung up on the snow. Big wheels work better in both sand and snow as they just seem to float over the stuff rather than sinking into it. It doesn't seem like a few inches of diameter should matter, but they do. I don't think a Pugsley is necessary.

Here's some pix from last February:

That's lake cuyamaca in the background... How many riders on the trail before me?????

A really pretty creek crossing:

I'm jonesing for snow. I think I have to try on Saturday. Anyone want to join? It'll be tougher on the single-speed now. But I'm game.

Favorite Trails: I don't ride dirt
I went up there today with the family to see the snow. We parked at the camp and hiked around and played in the snow, wow there was more up there than I expected. Wish I had the bike, looked like it could be fun but messy. Lots of people up there sledding and making snowmen, those suckers are everywhere.

On another note my 5 yr old daughter blasted in me square in the face w/ a snow ball when I wasn't looking. Damn she has an arm!
