I've been thinking of taking my SS out there for awhile and was curious as to what gear ratio you ran and what ratio you would run next time?

I ran 33:18 and I think it will be fine that way without (much) HAB in the other direction (down Oriflamme and up Rodriguez and Chariot Canyons). Going up Oriflamme as we did, you'd probably want to be much closer to 1:1 should you have ambition to clear all of it.

This ride sounds painfully good.

The part that sucked about Oriflamme was the rocks, lots of chunk you just coundn't get in a good cadence. I am running 32-20 on my 29er.

Riding up Oriflamme is nuts, SS or geared. That's why they make you do it on the Julian Death March, where I think most riders end up doing a little HAB, even on gearies with granny gears.

EMFC is right--it's all the little rocks that kill you.
