Sat, May 16 - Build Day #2 - 6pm

(Man working in garage w/ garage door open. Wife comes out of house to check on man and ask suggestion for dinner.)

"What's that?" (The wife pointing.)

"It's a bike," replies the man.

"Well I can see that. (lightbulb clicks) You bought a new bike!?"

"No just a frame," replies the man.

"You bought a new frame!?"

"No, it's a used frame. I already had the parts…well most of the parts," replies the man.

"When did you buy that!?"

"Over lunch," replies the man.

"You bought it over lunch?"

"Well, I actually bought it over lunch on Thursday," replies the man.

"And you didn’t tell me?"

And so goes man’s age old dilemma of feeding his hobby, repeated daily throughout the world.

Nicely done, I guess the rest of the parts where free.
BTW we have to have a DT Lake Hodges full tour soon, new bridge and all.

Yep, all other parts came off my recent upgrade of the RIP (viewtopic.php?f=13&t=2119) and prior parts. Everything is completely used aside from the shifter cable & housing.

That's why I keep old parts, you never know when they come handy, I like your 1x9 set up, is that a 32 or 34t up front?

It's actually a Blackspire MonoVelocie 36T. I thought it would be too high for 29 gearing, but it worked out quite well w/ the 11-32 rear cassette. The tires roll pretty fast (as compared to my Nevegals), so I'm in the middle sprockets most of the time around Hodges.

Nice looking Ht bro!! Did you go with the Bontrager tire set-up I'm running on mine (AC-X rear and XR front)??

I was doing some routine maintenance on my 29er a bit ago and noticed I'm running an 11-32 cassette when I thought I was running an 11-34. All this time, granny gear could have been even easier.

No, the whole point was for this build to be 100% used and as dirt cheap as possible. So it's the WTB WeirWolf 2.55 that came off the RIP and Exiwolf that I took off the RIP when I first got it. I'm also running 4oz of Stans in the tubes cuz I'm not going getto tubeless on these rims. So yeah, this bike weighs in at a portly 28.5 lbs, while my 5" travel RIP rebuild weighs just 1 lb more.

That's actually not too bad for a steel frame 29er. My EMD weighs just under 25 lbs and I had to work at that. Sweet ride for $177!!

I bet you could shed a couple more pounds by dropping those extra gears.

Maybe it should be mandatory for SS'rs to drive their car in one gear too?

The old Zion looks great. You could have told the wife that I gave you the frame or even better, I paid you to take it. My wife is already asking for the money I got for selling it.

Hope you enjoy it

The wife and I have a debate about whether unassembled frames actually count towards my bike tally. But she tends to forget about them, so everything is cool as long as they lie around in a "dormant" state. However, one thing is for certain, once I build one up using parts lying around it always counts as a "new bike" no matter how long I've had the stuff.

Maybe you should disassemble all of your bikes except one. When you want to ride a different one, disassemble that one and put together the other one. That way you can claim you only have one bike.
