^^ I'd be interested to know how she rides for you, and compares to the 26" Stumpy that you used to own and that I still do...TIA

^^^ C'mon Fred, I remember a picture where she was looking all sweet and new in soft focus against the dewy chaparral, with the sunlight glinting blindingly off the gold accents...post that one.

(There are some sweet bikes in this thread. I wonder if someone will start a "Post your Tweener" thread).

^^^ You know that's the bike that sealed the deal for me. :)

I was torn between the Stumpy 29" or just getting another 26" and made up my mind that day we swapped bikes at Calaveras.

We'll have to swap again to see what you think of the EVO package.

Some initial thoughts after a few laps at La Costa, the differences are way more than just the wheel size. It's much stiffer, slacker, has more travel, and only slightly heavier.

It climbs better and faster, it corners way better and more confidently, and it descends and drops way smoother. I actually overshot the box drop on NASCAR, fully compressed the fork and still had no fear of going OTB.

Two trade offs were obvious, it's a little harder to pop the front wheel over stuff (not to mention bunny hop), and it flies through the air like a brick. I'm also trying to get used to the different line the rear tire takes through obstacles and sharp corners.

I'm glad I still have my rigid SS to work on handling skills because I can see where this bike could make me extremely lazy.

I plan on riding Elfin this Wednesday to see how it does on The Way Up. I'm especially interested in seeing how it handles some of the bigger steps that would hang up my 26" bike as well as a couple of the tighter corners.

EDIT: Adding some thoughts after riding Elfin Forest...

Same overall success rate on the climb, just with a lot less energy. Big difference was coming down. I knew I'd literally be racing the ranger to the gate, so I mostly pinballed down, missing lines left and right, and it pretty much didn't matter.

A nice surprise is that what it gives up in the longer wheelbase is made up for with its slow speed stability. Meaning that I could turn the front tire almost 90 degrees and still stay upright through the sharpest turns.

Almost too easy

Thanks very much for the info Brian - comes at just the right time...
I'm watching a 2013 Stumpy 29er (used demo) on ebay - gotta make-up my mind in the next day.
Although, I'm leaning heavily toward Mach 429 or SB 95 as a chance to try a different geomety.
Decisions, decisions, decisions...

I'm not sure the geometry is that different between the new Stumpy 29, 429, or SB95, but all are completely different than the older Stumpy 26.

The 429 and SB95 both have more efficient suspension designs than the Stumpy, but also come with a much bigger price tag for it.

Happy shopping!

There's always gold on O.C Craigslist if you don't mind a used bike.
