Post subject:  New 29er Build (Completed Pics on Page 2)

I've decided to build myself another toy. Unlike others (Belizean) I keep my bikes for a loooong time, so I plan this to be used for many years (unless of course someone offers more than what it actually cost to build).

After having done a few of the QnD races, and my car racing backgroud, I decided if I was going to do more of that I needed the right tool for the job, so I'm building an uber light Carbon hardtail, and not just hardtail, it's going to start full rigid, for simplicity and to save for the right fork in the future.

With the well known fact that lots of product comes from China and get's marked up because of the name on the frame, I decided to give it a go and order a frame direct from China. With the cost savings on the frame I'm also able to do a set of Carbon wheels, as well as several other pieces.

Well, all told, the frame, wheels, bar, seatpost and a pile of other misc parts, spare drop outs, different sized axles for the wheels, shipping and Paypal fee I'm in for $1600, which is about what a name brand carbon frame goes for alone.

I ordered this frameset http://www.xmiplay.com/ProductDetails1571 and wheels, etc from this vendor. The guy on the other end Peter is involved in many of the Forums involving these carbon bikes and was very helpful and responsive throughout the process. Even set me up to do a deposit to get things rolling so when I had the full amount it would be a short turn around.

So about a week ago I made final payment and was told everything should ship by this coming Monday or Tuesday. Now I'm not sure how long shipping will take, I've seen anything from 2 weeks to a month.

In the meantime, I also started shopping for drivetrain, brakes, etc. I was originally planning to go with the new Shimano XTR 1x11, because I know Shimano product, but somewhere along the way I decided to go with SRAM XX1 1x11 for various reason. Those include the uber cool rear cassette with 10x42, vs the Shimano 11x40, and I decided to go with GripShift to keep a super clean cockpit.

Well, from here I say let the pictures begin, because today was like Christmas as parts started to arrive!!!!

What all did I get????

And now with some weights.

Rocket Ron, Box says 520, actual is 532

Thunder Burt Snake Skin, Box says 515, actual is 551 (someone was dyslexic)

XX1 Crankset

XX1 Spyder

Wolf Tech One piece, only 30grams heavier than the spyder alone, so there must be some weight savings in there. Not to mention Money Savings!

Looks good mounted on the crank

I have the lightbicycle carbon rims. They are pretty damn good I must say.

Gotta love china for taking a piece of the bike pie.

My experience with light bicycle and their Chinese carbon products has been all positive the wheels have held up now for eight or nine months to a lot of abuse

Good to hear more good experiences. Don't know anyone local that has a frame, but everything I've seen says it's just as good as name brand frames. Well, except maybe for a full pro that can tell the difference in portions of a second on lap times.

Don't be fooled. They are the same frame and probably manufactured in the same factory. Minus the American brand.

Check out the review on the new roval wide carbon rims and then go compare the profile to the lightbicycle 30mm internal width AM rims.

So, I sat down and put all the parts in a spreadsheet and the guesstimated weight, based on published numbers should put this in the 18.6lb range.

Got shipping info this evening for the frame and wheels, expected delivery is 6-7 days. So if all goes well the frame will go for painting next week.

A few more goodies showed up today.

Rotors, BB, Seat, tire sealant.

Front rotor 180mm Hope, they are actually red, but look a little pinkish in this light. 158g about 12g over what I thought.

Image

Rear Rotor 160mm Hope 105g, about 13 g over what I thought. I'll have to weight the bolts, I'm guessing they come to about 12g.

Image

SRAM BB 111g, 8g less than planned

Image

Ergon SM3 Pro 251g, about 6g over advertised.

Image

And some Sealant, stems and rim tape.

Frame, Fork, wheels, etc should be showing up next week. Frame will go to painter, then build will probably be another week or two out due to schedule. But we'll see.

Tracking shows "Handed over to US Customs" yesterday. I guess I could see it as soon as tomorrow, but probably Tuesday.

Ok, here are some cell phone pics before polish and wax. I noticed a minor spot that the paint was damaged on the non drive side. I think from touching something while wet.. otherwise looks amazing.

Did some work tonight. Polished, waxed and started assembling. Got the cranks, derailieur and rear caliper on. Threw the wheels on for a photo.

Planning to pick up a stem tomorrow, then push ahead with running cable and brake lines.

More pics to come later.

I think I want to see more pictures of this bike even more than I want to see Jenifer Lawrence's iphone photos. What a beauty!

Only thing left to do is pick up some Crank Boots and install red seatpost clamp when it arrives.

Real weight were not close to estimated weights. Bathroom Scale weight puts it at 20lbs, compared to an estimated 18.6.
