I'm looking into replacing my Iron Horse 6Point. I do mostly AM and light freeriding (up to 8ft drops to transitions) and I like to ride ATT, TW, Noble, etc.

I also have a 29er SS hardtail and every time I take it out I'm surprised at how much traction it has and how confidence inspiring those big wheels are.

No shops seems to demo the WFO and I really don't want to buy one or build one up just to see if I like it. I think the WFO was be great for most of my riding, but I'm a little concerned about how it takes the impact of drops having only 140mm of travel.

Anyone out there have a WFO and push it a little into free riding?

Hmmmm, maybe you should look into a Carbon Nomad…

I take 8 inch drops to flat with mine all the time with no problem.

I might even have hit 9-10 incher or two in Mammoth last week.

Bike(s): Stumpjumper 29er
Favorite Trails: Calavera,Chaa Creek Bze
This bike sounds a little beefier than the Specialized Stumpjumper 29er, 140 rear n 130 mm fork, which I love but I don't have the mindset (balls) to really push this bike. It rolls fast over rocks and climbs really well (28.5 lbs) but not a bike that is flicked around like a 26er; it takes way more effort to get it off the ground. Wheel design is getting better but I'm not sure the 29 inch wheels will do big drops consistently. Check the reviews on Mtbr.

I don't have any personal experience with long travel 29ers beyond your own (i.e. have a Nimble 9 that just flies over the jumbly bits of trail with its big wheels and would like to play on a LT 29er). In my internet wanderings I came across Lenz bikes-sounds more like what you're after. Here's a video link from their site on some smooth jump/flow trails at Winter Park, CO as well.

^^^Nice video. The Lenz Mammoth and a coupla other longish-travel 29ers are reviewed in the current Dirt Rag print edition. And there are some WFO reviews to be found by googlin'. Generally people seem to be liking the longer-travel ones for eating up rough terrain, but they're not really talking much about getting air...

Maybe go with the new 29er....... the 650B. When it actually comes out, the Intense Tracer 275 may be -demo-able around here. It would appear to be what you're looking for.

Ya, the "inbetweeners" look promising. Fox already has a 6" fork for the 27.5 wheels. From what I hear they can build 27.5" frames more like 26" frames for longer travel but still get some of the benefit of bigger wheels

In the vimeo tag, just enter the numbers at the end for the video. Example but w/o the dot at the end [vimeo]43775017[/vimeo.]

I rode one on a too short demo ride, but ended up buying the Rip9 instead. The WFO was a great bike but too heavy to climb all the SoCal trails. It would be a cool bike at Mammoth but you'd get some stares. In general however if you want a bigger hit bike you should go with a 26er or go trendy with the 27.5.

Yes that means 29ers are no longer trendy!
