this is the most appropriate forum since my road bike IS a SS :) i've been riding it lately and have been noticing the effects it's having on my mtn biking. I've heard and read that road riding helps your stamina/endurance when it comes to offroad riding.

Well today i noticed it as after my climbs i'm usually so spent it's hard for me to go at a good pace. Now i notice that after a good warm up i'm able to recover more quickly and pushing bigger gears as well. My ride home from the park is a .25 mile climb home it's usually a bear because you had a long ride etc. Today i was peddling up the hill middle 2 down, and the last 100 meters i upshifted to middle 4 got up out of my saddle and just peddled up. Mind you if i did that before i would be SPENT by the time the road leveled out. I was tired at all, i recovered and was able to maintain the same gearing to ride home.

Totally awesome feeling too.

I hear you. I've given up up on driving if the errand is in town. With that hitting the trail I'm able to hit the trails harder. Sloth was mentioning last ride how much better I'm climbing and I'm pretty sure it is the road bike.

just so im clear with everyone though...i'm not ready for spandex yet :) i rode in my knickers ;) LOL and i do this creek trail that goes from wood canyon to almost where cook's corner is...bout 1.5 hrs there and a tad over 30 mins back as it's a slight downhill home :) i'd say 95% of the ride in in a safe bike trail as opposed to the road.

as much as i love the SS i can imagine how much faster i can be w/ gears

Let's just go ahead and issue an anti-lycra clause to dirt treaders. No lycra unless you are racing! I agree foo, I refuse to be caught as one of those roadies. Besides hitting on girls at the store in lycra doesn't work so well, it's very :chodie:...ok so I needed a reason to use the smiley again

lycra = :chodie:

If I'm running errands, I wear regular clothes. All other times, lycra all the way! :hello:

I'd believe it but if you are using road riding as a training tool, wouldn't it make sense to train with resistance. Maybe it is just me.

if you think about it the faster you go the more wind resistance you get plus if you're going fast you're probably pushing bigger gears so you're getting a good work out.

For now my SS road bike is a great standby for now

If you're training with a group, part of the training is to work on pack skills: sitting in the pack, pulling the pack, running the paceline. Sometimes the group is a much faster than you, such that you have to give it all just to stay in the draft.

It doesn't matter though. You can get the same workout with the wind resistance or without. You'll just be in a different gear and riding a different speed.
