So I had my MRI follow-up yesterday thinking, alright, i've been patient, took care of the ankle as best I could, stayed off it ... fast fwd through today, got a call from my doc at 4PM. He says, Bad news, your ankle hasn't healed and the lesion looks bigger.

Here's what I found on the injury: "The final and most difficult type of lesion to treat is the subchondral cystic lesion with intact overlying cartilage and bone. In this type of lesion, the pain is from the constant compression of the cyst with activity but there is no overlying damage to the cartilage and bone. There is also a problem with mild sclerosis of the walls of the cyst that one must treat. In certain cases, an OATS allograft option is the best option. This type of treatment is best in large lesions with a major defect of over 1 cm with extensive depth. We try to avoid drilling of these lesions as the superficial cartilage and bone are intact and stable."

Anyway, mine is 3.5CM - CRAP!!!

I now have to see an ortho and evaluate my options. Best case for me is, stay off it another 4 weeks and see if it heals up (i've been down 9 already :x ) and worse case, scoping of some sort :x :x :x. To top it all off, i'm back on crutches. Oh man, this is killing me.

I guess I can spend this down time and learn how to build wheels again or clean my bike.
Anybody else out there ever had this? or if you've had an injury you've experienced that knocked you down, how did you cope without riding?

Geez sorry to hear that...I know youve been itching to ride. I guess you have to spend more time with the family and watching bmx/mountain bike vids. Hope it finally heals cleanly.

I'm sorry to hear it man...keep your chin up, things will come around before you know it.
I've never had that but we have had a few injuries in our household...
Last year my wife tore her acl and fractured her tibial plateau...she couldn't ride for over 6 months. Last year I fractured my tibial plateau, I should have been out for a few months but I was out for a month and a half, but for a couple months riding was real light. About 10 years ago I lacerated my left leg just below my knee and also tore my miniscus, I was out for about 4 months.
During these "down times", my bikes became immaculate..rebuilt...retuned..recleaned...brakes rebled...recleaned..overhauled...wheels trued...new parts...build up another old frame...clean it...overhaul it...buy new parts for it...retune it...reclean it..dust all the bikes off...dust them again...etc
then the following week..j/k
I read a lot, watched a lot of mt biking vids and shows..totally jonesed for anything bike related.
I hope you deal with it better than I did...
Heal well and hope to see you on the trails all fresh and ready to go.

Ok. I don't have anything gory, but I did snap a picture of my ankle on the day I did it. It's bizarre because there's an imprint of a TEETHING ring on the skin  -- I wrapped that around my ankle since our ice machine was broken.

But you can see some sweet surgical pics here: http://www.podiatrytoday.com/article/6304

Thanks for the well wishes. My journey begins....

I was off the bike for almost 9 months due to my knee. It sucked. A lot. What made it worse was that much of that time was due to my HMO doing whatever they could to avoid paying for a surgery.

The only way I could deal with it was to stop reading MTBR, all the magazines, blogs, and never even looked at the bike. On the positive side, I spend way less on the magazines now.

Good luck. Hope to see you on the trail soon.

Dude, isn't faster at some point just to cut off your foot and learn to ride with a prosthetic? Your call, but I say off with the foot!
