So I have an Maxtor One Touch II external HD, that I store all the pics in, well last week it told me

F:\ is not accessible

The parameter is incorrrect

So I downloaded Handy Recovery 4.0 & can see the photo's. I was thinking of downloading getdataback program. Both of these you have to pay.

I called Maxtor & both times they say reformat & erase your pics, yeah right my wife will kill me.

Anyways is there a way to fix it, without erasing, or should I just download data recovery software & pay the fee.

there are a few oss disk rescue apps out there, but i've heard good things about photorec for recovering photos.

this site also recommends testdisk: http://www.cgsecurity.org/wiki/Main_Page

Have you tried it on a different computer? have you tried to right click on the drive from my computer and selecting explore?

you can also try to rename the drive,

gimme a call,
I can walk you through it

When it rains it pours.

So I got a recovery program to save most of the pics on the external 300GB HD. However my Internal HD is 160GB, yep you guessed it it's full.

So now I need an Internal HD to put in my Dell computer. So can I slap in this internal HD & be good http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6822136218

I don't know what to see on the specs if its compatible, or some people talk about jumpers?

Can I put it in & transfer over the old internal HD to the new internal one?

Need to buy a new External HD too. Was looking at one of the WD, as I will not being buying Seagate/Maxtor products anymore after this External HD issue.

Then my HP laptop where you plug the power cord into the computer the DC power jack(power connector board, a piece broke off internally, tried to solder it back together, but no dice. I can't charge up my laptop. Is there a place locally to get HP parts.
Here's the part I'm talking about
http://partsurfer.hp.com/cgi-bin/spi/sh ... 382414-001

So no working External HD,Out of Space Internal HD, & laptop not charging.Sucks to be me right now.

why do you need a new internal hd when you're getting a new external?

harddrives fail. i've had hit or miss luck with maxtor. i think my external is maxtor though, and it's good.

anyway, you should use 2 types of backup medium. you can't depend on the hd alone. even when you get the new one, it will probably fail some day too. i would do another backup with dvd.

My Internal HD is full, that is why I was thinking of getting a new Internal HD with more space, so I can leave photos on my internal & external, instead of having all photos on just the external.

My recommendations would be to ADD that 640Gb drive to your computer. You need to know if you need Sata or IDE. It depends on how old your computer is. If you pull the side off the tower and there is a cable that looks like a 2.5" wide ribbon, its IDE. Anything else would most likely be Sata.

Next, get yourself a new external and use it to back up the 640GB internal you just added to the tower. Maxtor really isn't all that bad. You have to remember that a HD is the only mechanical part on the computer besides the fans and it will ware out an fail at some point.
If you're not actively backing up to your external, unplug it and it will hopefully extend its life. The only sure fire way to back up you files is to DVD at this point.

Thanks guys I really appreciate your help.

The wife is all over me like cheap suit, so I need to resolve this ASAP.

I will order a new internal & external HD, & make backup's onto DVD too.

My wife thinks she's Ansel Adam's. I think the computer is a Jukebox.
