My favorite every-day drinkin' beer, with a big ol' bowl of curry chicken and basmati rice -- perfect after-ride nourishment.

I checked out the tasting room at San Diego's newest nanobrewery, the Hess Brewing Company in Mira Mesa. It's about the size of a two-car garage and has been open for 3 weeks. 5 beers on tap, and the only place you can get the brew is at the tasting bar or in growlers.

Image

It's at 7955 Silverton, just off Dowdy and north of Miramar Road. Open Saturdays 1-5pm, among other times. 2-7pm Tues-Fri. I did the 5 little tastes and a Hess keep-the-glass for ten bucks, then scored me one of them free pints of love.

I had a bottle of Nelson last night, the Exponential is just too hoppy even for me. OK, maybe one bottle

Thats quite the collection of bottles on the cupboard...when are we all going to be invited to help empty them? It would be a shame if they went bad.

I stopped at Alpine on Sat after the noble ride and filled growlers of their Captain Stout and their soccer world cup-inspired Red Card ale. The RC is particularly tasty, I'd go check it out there before its gone (paging 406!)

I need to stop by there after my next trip to the Lagunas. BevMo doesn't stock their product, and I've heard nothing but good things about that brewery.

Speaking of beer Evan, how much time have you been spending at the O.B. Pizza Port?

Eric, you can also go by Beverages4Less on Mission Gorge. They usually have quite a few bottles of Pure Hopiness for sale there, along with some other really good selections. No need to drive to Alpine.

^^^ Thanks Scott. I took a quick look at the link and saw a lot of tasty choices in addition to the Pure Hoppiness.

The photo is not my stash... just a reference photo, my Expo is in growler format :D . I love the hoppiness of the Expo, I prefer it to Pure Hoppiness, but like both for sure. The Nelson is great too, Alpine really puts out awesome beers

I had seen their site before, but thanks for the reminder. Conveniently, we will be over that way before the sdmba meeting tomorrow night. Looks like we'll have some appropriate beverages for the meeting! And a good reason to ride spring/oak more often

The guy that runs the place is a riot to talk to. He reminds me of the Tom Hanks character from the SNL skit Sabra Price is Right.

Haha, Freddy is super cool. I highly recommend this place. Watch out though...going into this is like going to Costco. You go into this place wanting to buy one specific thing and you come out spending 5x the amount. That happened to me the last few times.

Within the past few days while outta town:

Firehouse Strong Arm Porter
Firehouse Smoke Jumper Stout

New Belgium Ranger IPA (common around here though)
Leinenkugel Honey Weiss
(in Minneapolis)

...and several I forget. Beer does that to me. Tomorrow night will be local --Stone 14th Anniversary Emperial.

Of the above, I liked the Smoke Jumper Stout the best. Great brewery & restaurant!
