Wow, glad to hear you are healing up. Was it riding related?

yeah, celebrating being alive for sure.

yes, riding related. diagnosis was originally missed at urgent care. went to doc as pain was getting worse and had mri at about 3 weeks out. ambulance ride to trauma center. neurosurgeon said he hadn't seen anyone with that much damage actually walk into the hospital under his own power, never mind walking around for 3 weeks. luckily only the anterior facing bone displaced (the one that looks like a tomahawk in the side view).

happy to be alive, and walking.

thanks!

thanks mike! but riding more carefully may not the the answer. i've done some pretty stupid things, but was usually acutely aware, or at least on guard, in those dumb ass situations. this was not. it was out of the blue on a trail i knew. it was a on a sharp corner after a short but rutted, rooted downhill. backside was blown out so i cut the apex hard. no worries, been there a dozen times. went to power out of the turn, i was already visually and mentally past the turn, when i struck a root or stump on my uphill pedal powering out. did a back over front corkscrew and because i was already looking past the corner i was blindsided by what happened next and didn't get my hands out in front of me. when i woke up i couldn't feel the left half my body. it did start tingling after a bit, a good sign. i figured i hurt my neck and shouldn't move, but it was late on a weekday, no one else was coming so i needed to get up and out of there. although i couldn't feel it well, i could put weight on my left foot, so walked out for about 1.5 - 2 hrs with the bike as a crutch. but yeah, my neck is like a fragile, thin, fairly rigid pencil for me right now. if i get to ride again, and i know i will, it will be carefully. but really, that kinda sucks. bigly.

moral of the story, don't stop pushing yourself, stay aware, and always have fun. this was just a one in a hundred million. you can't live your life by what might happen at one in a hundred million, so don't.

again, thank you all for the kind thoughts. will be riding with you in the future. count on it.
