The economy being on the downturn has it's advantages.

1. Less spending = more sales (in some segments)
2. Lower cost for fuel
3. Car manufacturers finally realizing that they can't just push big cars anymore, fuel efficiency and alternative fuel is the only way to survive

Negatives
1. People losing their jobs (not our company but other industries)
2. Smaller package sizes for foods (without you knowing it)
3. 401k worth significantly less than it did before (but if you're in it for the long haul, no biggie really)

I work in a healthcare industry so we're not subject to economic conditions at least not nearly to the level of most industries. People still need their meds and we're happy to help make it happen.

So no, haven't gone Crank Brothers over CK lately.

I actually recently bought a wheel with a Chris King hub. I guess I do the reverse, since I'm a cheapass normally.

I the only thing I'm doing differently is solidifying my emergency fund so that I can survive for longer if I lose my job. My company only gets funding for months at a time, so job loss was always possible, but I always figured it would not be too difficult to get another one.

I'm helping keep my favorite LBS afloat. Just bought a new rear wheel and shifters. CK hub, Stans Flows, X9 deraileurs, and X0 shifters baby! :D bjammin does awesome work.

Yes I need to manage spending. And I need to put off retirement by a couple years. I'll spend less at the mega stores like Wallymart on crap that I don't need, but I won't stop spending at my favorite local haunts. Heaven forbid if all the great local bike stores go out of business and I have to shop at Performance!

We always have layoff's. This is the peak season for us, as they make a mad dash to get everyone off payroll by EoY.

No sense in worrying about stuff you can't control. When they kick you out the door...start to stress. Plan for a rainy day and a layoff. Chances are both can happen at once. Look for opportunities. They are always there just harder to see when things go south.

I stick to local rides. No more heading up to the Santa Ana Mountains to hit up my favortie trails every week. I only drive once a month to long distance rides.

We stopped eating out and going to movies and I fired my coach and picked up a part-time job while I'm finishing school. The g/f changed jobs to a guaranteed full-time schedule.

Doesn't stop me from training my arse off.
