A friend of mine wants to get into mountain biking and had some questions for me...problem is I know very little. So I ask the treaders here if they could please keep their eyes open for any good deals around the mountain biking world. He didn't give me a budget but I did let him know what to expect to spend on decent low end bikes.

Thanks!

Hey Fat, get a budget from him first. It will be near to impossible to search for what you don't even know his price range is. If he's got some money to spend, have him come over to my "shop", I can build him up something real nice.
If he's a beginner, he shouln't really spend much more that $500 or $600, as this is just the bike he'll be using to get his bearings, to learn the fundamentals, to crash. Its after he finally realizes how much he likes and enjoys the sport, and has a good comprehension of the basic skills needed and used that he'll want to upgrade. Basically go from a HT to a FS, or any other genre of mtbiking he may be into. If you need more help give me a call.

what pete and thai said, you can cobble together a pretty decent bike by piecing it together.
