Hoping to find a modern geo size small 27.5" bike for the wifey. An Evil the Calling would be nice... (over budget though). Speaking of which, since there is a reasonable likelihood that this may not 'stick', I don't want to break the bank. Budget is anywhere from $900 to maybe $2K'ish for the right bike. Lot's of options out there, but preference is what I might call trail/enduro - 130mm to 150mm. Not an XC bike.

If you have one that didn't 'stick', was outgrown, or you just happen to stumble onto a deal on the interwebs, hit me up.

IN-TER-EST-ING... You're definitely right to err on the slack side. It's the terrifying descents that threatened to turn The Phantom Bride off of MTB when I first got her started.

Why not consider a 29er? It'll make the trails seem less bumpy and make climbs easier. I kinda doubt sharp switchbacks are in your immediate future.

Finally, you probably already knew this, but I'd recommend focusing on trails with a lot of beauty. I think one of the main draws of MTB for TPB is that we can ride out to see more pretty stuff compared to hiking. Laguna (followed by a stop at Alpine brewery) is our go-to ride.

Best of luck!

It can be pretty hard to find a good deal on a modern bike in size S. This was posted locally on FB last week and might still be available. If you want, I can contact the owner, or you could ask Milo as I think it’s a friend of his.

...well, 9 minutes ago he dropped the price:

She rode her sister's 29r once. It just seems to big all the way around. I think agility will win over bumps.

Thanks for the link Dan. The Patrol is awesome, but the investment in all the components above and beyond the frame puts it too far over budget.

I did see this Ibis Mojo HD3 for $2660 on CL. I thought it might be Milo's. Not a bad deal from the looks of it. Over budget still though (and maybe a bit to flash). Think I'll reach, but I'll be surprised if there's $660 worth of wiggle room.

If you're not sure if this is going to stick, I wonder if you might be better off just renting at first. I know ~$100/day can be hard to swallow, but it's a whole lot more convenient than searching for and finding a used bike, buying it, fixing it up, trying it, and possibly selling it if she doesn't like it.

I'm pretty sure Canyon has a rental fleet. I've rented from Cal Coast bicycles before and they are great, although perhaps too far from your place.

Buy the best bike you can. My wife did not really like MTB until she got a bike that fit and works well.

130-140 mil travel with 2.6 tires. Comfort and traction leads to confidence and fun.

Now she is booking us on MTB vacations..

Just browsed this website for the first time in months. Shannon, Im trying to get rid of my turner rfx small if you're interested. I've realized I should be on a medium and have a bike I've been looking at. Its been well used but I've kept up most maintenance and just recently put in $400 in pivot bearings/new drivetrain except crank/seat/rear tire with maybe 75 miles on the new parts. Areas that may need attention: the dropper works fine but could use a new one down the road as the stanchion is showing wear, a rear wheel true/maybe new bearings. Its a 2016 so not the newest geometry but has served me well. Typical scratches of an almost 4 year old bike and some wear on the down tube from shuttle pad but no major scrapes on the carbon. Id be willing to negotiate as I am prying picking up a new bike this weekend.

She will. Just don’t get too enthusiastic and be that guy who gets ‘em in over their head and makes ‘em cry!

lol. So don't do it the same way I did with my kids. Check. (good advice!).

Yeah Harley, I'll have to think about getting up in those mountains asap. (I see what you did).

The Turner suspension design is very good.
